This article explains how to add tags to the Kepware agent and how to configure scan rates and publishing modes to keep data volume within platform limits.

Before adding tags, complete the steps in Set Up and Configure the Kepware IoT Gateway to create your connector instance, access token, and Kepware agent.

How Tags Are Identified in MaintainX®

When a tag reading arrives at MaintainX, the full Channel.Device.Tag path is used as the tag identifier. For example, a tag at McHenryPLC.101-11.HopperGate in Kepware appears under that same name in MaintainX.

Understanding this hierarchy is important when using smart tag mapping, because the tag name MaintainX displays is derived directly from the path you configure in Kepware. For more information, see Tags and Tag Hierarchy.

Add a Tag

  1. Right-click on the Kepware agent you created and select New IoT Item.

  2. In the Server Tag field, browse for the tag you want to add to the agent.

  3. In the Scan Rate field, enter the rate at which the tag should be scanned.

    note

Set the scan rate to 10,000ms or higher to avoid rate limiting. Lower scan rates generate more events per transmission.

  4. Select your publishing mode.

    note

Use Only on data Changes. This sends a reading only when the tag value changes, which significantly reduces event volume compared to always-on publishing. Sending unchanged values repeatedly risks exceeding the platform's 1,000-event-per-transmission limit.

  5. Select OK.

Repeat these steps for each tag you want to monitor.

Map Tags to Meters

After adding tags to the agent, use smart tag mapping in MaintainX to connect your tags to meters.

The smart tag mapping system uses AI to analyze the tags available through your Kepware connectors. For each tag, the system suggests a meter name, a unit of measurement, and an asset to assign the meter to. Using the tag management tool, you can:

  • View the Kepware tags available through your organization's connectors.
  • Review MaintainX's suggestions for mapping tags to assets.
  • Automatically create meters for your tags and associate them with the correct assets.

The tag mapping AI provides a confidence rating for each suggestion. You can edit any suggestion before creating the meter, and update mapped tags at any time.

For detailed instructions, see Smart Tag Mapping for OT Data.

info

The smart tag mapping system replaces the Auto Create Meters feature, which is no longer available. If you have existing OT connectors that connect to meters you configured using the Auto Create Meters feature, the smart tag mapping system will not affect them.
