MaintainX's AI-powered anomaly detection system uses historical and trend-based data to automatically determine whether a value that a user enters in a procedure or a meter readings is an anomaly that needs closer attention.

  • Predict faults: Get notified at the earliest signs of equipment faults.
  • Eliminate errors: Identify values that might have been entered by mistake to improve data quality.
  • Minimize downtime: Deal with problems before equipment goes offline.

Where Can MaintainX Detect Anomalies?

When you toggle anomaly detection on, the AI model detects anomalies in:

  • Procedure fields in recurring and non-recurring work orders.

To detect anomalies in procedure fields, the procedure must have been used in at least three historical work orders. MaintainX can detect anomalies in numerical fields such as Number, Amount, or Meter Reading fields.

  • Meter readings recorded manually, directly on a meter (i.e., not within a procedure).

    availability

Anomaly detection for meter readings is only available in the MaintainX web application.

Enable Anomaly Detection

You enable anomaly detection from the Work Order settings in the MaintainX web application.

  1. From the sidebar, open the Settings menu, and select Features.
  2. On the Features page, navigate to the Work Orders section and select Set Preferences.
  3. On the Work Orders settings page, navigate to Procedures, and toggle Anomaly Detection on.

What Anomaly Detection Looks For

MaintainX's AI model can detect anomalies in procedure fields, or meter readings, that meet any of the following criteria:

  • Left blank.
  • Missing a decimal when the value usually has one, or vice versa.
  • Adding a decimal would bring the value you entered closer to the expected value. For example, if the past three values were 10, and you enter 102, a value of 10.2 would be closer to the expected value.
  • Are negative when the value is usually positive, or vice versa.
  • Out of the range that you'd expect based on past values.
  • Different from what you'd expect based on the current trend. For example, if a value that has been going down consistently suddenly goes up.

How to Handle Anomalies

In a Procedure Field

When MaintainX detects an anomaly in a procedure field, it displays a short message that tells you how the value you entered is different from the expected value.

You can handle the anomaly in the following ways:

ActionDescriptionResult
Correct the valueIf you entered an anomalous value by mistake, enter the correct value in the field. The message disappears, and you can continue working.
Reject the anomalyIf the value isn't a real anomaly, select It's Expected. The anomaly disappears, and you can continue working.
Confirm the anomalyIf the value is a real anomaly, select It's an Anomaly.New fields appear for you to add a picture and a note.

Add them as needed, and continue working.

Follow Up on a Confirmed Anomaly in a Procedure Field

When you confirm an anomaly in a procedure field, MaintainX does the following:

  • Records a flag on the work order where you confirmed the anomaly.

You can see the flag in the comment history for the work order where you confirmed the anomaly.

  • When you save the work order, prompts you to create a corrective action.

    note

You must set the Corrective Actions on Flags (including Anomalies) setting to Automatic with Prompt to get a corrective action prompt when MaintainX detects an anomaly.

You can find this setting in the Procedures section of the Work Orders settings (See Work Order Settings).

In a Meter Reading

When MaintainX detects an anomaly in a manual meter reading, it displays a short message that tells you how the value you entered is different from the expected value.

You can handle the anomaly in the following ways:

ActionDescriptionResult
Correct the valueIf you entered an anomalous value by mistake, enter the correct value in the field. The message disappears, and you can submit the value to return to the meter details.
Reject the anomalyIf the value isn't a real anomaly, leave the Mark as Anomaly option toggled off.The message disappears, and you can submit the value to return to the meter details.
Confirm the anomalyIf the value is a real anomaly, toggle the Mark as Anomaly option on.MaintainX records the anomaly on the meter. You can submit the value and return to the meter details.

If you look a the reading history for the meter, you'll see the reading marked as an anomaly.

If you open the reading details, you'll see a message that identifies the type of anomaly.
