This article explains the relationship between parent locations and sub-locations, and how to create location hierarchies.

What's a Parent Location and a Sub-Location?

A sub-location is dependent on another location, called a parent location. For instance, if your organization is a facility with multiple buildings on the same lot, your parent location could be the whole facility. The sub-locations could be the other buildings on the lot such as a warehouse.

Sub-locations have the same functionality as parent locations. They're grouped under their parent locations. Sub-locations are useful to structure your organization and gather more insights on maintenance tasks.

note

There is only one level of hierarchy available for locations and sub-locations. This means that you can't have a sub-location linked to another sub-location. You can only have a parent that has sub-locations linked to it.

Create a Parent/Sub-Location Relationship

To create a parent/sub-location relationship, you can:

  • Edit the intended parent location and create a sub-location for it.
  • Edit the intended sub-location and assign it to a parent location.

Create a Sub-Location for a Parent Location

  1. From the sidebar, select Locations.
  2. In the Locations module, select the parent location you want to create the sub-location for.
  3. In the location details, select Create Sub-Location. The New Sub-Locations dialog opens.
  4. Enter a name for the sub-location.
  5. Select Create.
  6. Repeat the last two steps to create additional sub-locations, or select Cancel to close the New Sub-Locations dialog.

In the location details, new sub-locations are under the parent location.

Assign a Sub-Location to a Parent Location

  1. From the sidebar, select Locations.
  2. In the locations list, select the location you want to assign to a parent location.
  3. Select Edit.
  4. In the location details, navigate to the Parent Location field, and select a location to use as a parent location.
  5. Select Update.

The location you edited becomes a sub-location of the parent location you chose. In the Locations module, the sub-location now shows under its new parent location.

Remove a Parent Location from a Sub-Location

  1. From the sidebar, select Locations.
  2. In the Locations module, select the parent location of the sub-location you want to remove.
  3. In the location details, navigate to the Sub-Locations section and select the sub-location you want to remove to display its details.
  4. Select Edit.
  5. Navigate to the Parent Location field, and select the (cancel) icon to remove the parent location.
  6. You can add a new parent location or leave the field blank.
  7. Select Update.

The location is no longer listed under its parent location.
