Skip or Cancel a Work Order

* This feature isn't available in all organizations by default. Contact your MaintainX Representative to request it.

You can skip repeating work orders in a chain, or cancel non-repeating work orders, to complete it without doing the work. For example, you might skip a daily machine inspection work order because the machine is down for repair.

Unlike deleted work orders which are removed completely, skipped/canceled work orders remain in your organization, and count towards your reporting data and work order totals.

What Happens When You Skip or Cancel A Work Order

When you skip or cancel a work order, the work order details show the skip/cancel date and time.

If the work order was created from a work request:

  • The request status changes to Canceled or Skipped
  • A notification appears in the request history to let the Requester know.

Skipping or Canceling Multi-Asset Work Orders

A multi-asset work order consists of a parent work order and two or more sub-work orders. You can skip or cancel a parent or sub-work order the same way you skip or cancel any other work order.

  • When you skip or cancel the parent work order, MaintainX skips/cancels all its sub-work orders.
  • When you skip or cancel a sub work order, MaintainX removes it from the parent work order.

You can't skip or cancel a sub-work order from its parent work order. You have to edit it directly to skip/cancel it.

Skip a Work Order

Skipped work orders are repeating work orders in a chain that you skip once. For example, a routine daily inspection that can be skipped for a single day. The chain resumes for the next planned work order.

  • Full Users can skip any work order that they created.
  • Administrators can skip any work order in the organization.
customization

If you have custom user roles, you can adjust their work order skip/cancel permissions. For details, see Custom Roles.

  1. From the sidebar, select Work Orders.

  2. Locate the work order you want to skip.

  3. On the work order details page, select (more options).

How do I know if a work order is part of a chain?

To identify work order chains in the MaintainX web application, open the (To Do View) and look for the (Chain) icon next to the work order name. For more information about work order chains, see Work Order Chains.

Cancel a Work Order

You can cancel non-repeating work orders that aren't part of a chain. For example, a one-off work order that you don't need to perform anymore.

  • Full Users can cancel any work order that they created.
  • Administrators can cancel any work order in the organization.

Why Can't I Skip or Cancel a Work Order?

You might be unable to skip or cancel work orders for the following reasons:

  • Feature not enabled - This feature isn't available in all organizations by default. Contact your MaintainX representative to request it.

  • Permission restrictions - Your Administrator might have limited who can skip or cancel work orders.

  • Work order ownership - Even with proper permissions, you can typically only skip or cancel work orders you created unless you're an Administrator.

If you've confirmed the feature is enabled and you have the right permissions, but you still can't skip or cancel a work order, contact MaintainX Support.
