The MaintainX® smart tag mapping system uses AI to automatically connect operational technology (OT) data signals from your facility to assets in MaintainX, analyzing the data tags you make available through OT data connectors configured for your organization.

Using the MaintainX tag management tool, you can:

  • View the tags (e.g., Ignition® tags or MQTT topics) that are available through OT data connectors configured for your organization.
  • Review MaintainX's suggestions for mapping tags to assets in your organization.
  • Automatically create meters for your tags and associate them with the correct assets.

Smart tag mapping only applies to tags discovered through an OT data connector. It doesn't apply to meters you create manually or through the REST API, since those meters have no discovered tag for MaintainX to map.

How Smart Tag Mapping Works

Smart tag mapping works with the assets you've already created in MaintainX. When you configure an OT data connector, MaintainX analyzes each incoming tag's name and data alongside those assets, then suggests the closest match. For each tag, MaintainX proposes a new meter, including its name, unit of measurement, and the asset to assign it to, along with a confidence rating.

MaintainX also learns from your input. When you accept, edit, or correct a suggestion, that feedback helps refine future suggestions, so the mapping system gets more accurate the more you use it.

note

You can also use the tag management tool to manage tags for vibration sensor data points, but it's not recommended.

Vibration monitoring is part of MaintainX's fully managed ERBESSD INSTRUMENTS® integration. Unlike the self-managed OT data connectors, its onboarding flow determines your tags for you automatically.

For more information about setting up vibration monitoring, contact your MaintainX representative.

Benefits of Smart Tag Mapping

Smart tag mapping brings your OT data into MaintainX faster and more easily than setting it up manually. It automatically connects your OT data to MaintainX data in meaningful ways, so technicians and maintenance managers can understand it.

After you bring your OT data into MaintainX, you can use it to:

  • Monitor and automate asset statuses: Track downtime automatically based on machine state signals. For a step-by-step example of this use case, see Set Up Automated Asset Status Changes.

  • Set up usage-based maintenance: Create work orders from actual run hours or cycles, ensuring preventive maintenance happens when equipment needs it instead of on a fixed calendar. For a step-by-step example of this use case, see Set Up Usage-Based Maintenance.

  • Enable condition-based maintenance: Create work orders when assets show signs of wear. For a step-by-step example of this use case, see Set Up Condition-Based Maintenance.

  • Power anomaly detection: Give MaintainX the asset context it needs to review incoming signals and flag anomalies. For more information, see AI-Powered Anomaly Detection.
